The remaining four chassis were to be converted to Bruckenleger IVc bridge carriers and two were tested with a new experimental suspension. ![]() Eventually, during a production run that lasted from October 1940 to April 1941, some 200 vehicles were built. This contract would be reduced to 206 vehicles in March 1941. In July 1939, the OKH awarded a contract for producing 223 vehicles to Krupp-Grusonwerke. One of the main changes that was originally planned was to use 50 mm thick frontal armor, but this was not implemented by the time of production. This version was, in essence, just a copy of the previous one, with some minimal changes to it. An interesting fact is that the Russians used this vehicle to build tank destroyers SU-76I and SU-85I.Following the introduction of the Panzer IV Ausf.D, the German Army High Command (Oberkommando des Heeres, OKH) issued orders for the development and production of the new Ausf.E version. In addition, a command vehicle and flamethrower tank were designed on the basis of the vehicle. German tank destroyers Sturmgeschutz StuG.III and self-propelled artillery Sturmhaubitze StuH.42 were created on chassis of this tank. ![]() In 1943 production of this vehicle was discontinued, focusing primarily on more advanced constructions. The vehicle crew consisted of five tankers. Each production series (Ausf.A - Ausf.N) was characterized by improved driving and battle performance properties that forced warfare and newly emerging enemy armored constructions. It was equipped with a cannon, depending on the version, 37mm, 50mm (from the Ausf.E version) and 75mm (in the Ausf.N version). ![]() Initially, it was to be the core of the German armored forces, however, over time and the emergence of more advanced constructions, its role was marginalized and became primarily an infantry support vehicle.
